Las Vegas tap water measures roughly 16 to 22 grains per gallon of hardness — about 291 parts per million. The USGS threshold for “very hard” water is around 10 gpg, which means Vegas water is roughly double the threshold. About 90% of it comes from Lake Mead via the Colorado River, picking up calcium and magnesium as it flows through limestone. Every time that water touches your glass and dries — sprinkler overspray, hose-down water, monsoon rain — those minerals stay behind.
This is not a cleaning problem. It is a chemistry problem.
Glass is primarily silica. When calcium and other minerals sit on glass long enough, they bond with the silica at the molecular level — the glass itself is altered. That is not a film or a stain. Once etching occurs, it cannot be cleaned, polished, or wiped off. The only fix is replacing the glass.
There is a window of time to act. Professional acid cleaning — a specialized process distinct from squeegee-and-soap — removes mineral deposits BEFORE they reach the etching stage. Done in time, the glass comes back fully clear. Done too late, you are collecting replacement quotes.
Every glass surface this applies to
- Storefront and entry glass — highest visibility, highest risk from irrigation overspray
- Interior partitions, conference room glass, glass-fronted offices
- Glass railings and stair systems
- Skylights and clerestory windows
- Mirrors in restrooms and common areas
- Exterior glass cladding and facades
What to look for
Early-stage mineral buildup reads as haze, spotting, or water marks that return quickly after cleaning. That is the maintainable stage. If your exterior glass has not been professionally cleaned in recent memory — or you can see spotting from ten feet away — it is worth an assessment before the chemistry crosses the line.
Our crews clean commercial glass across Las Vegas and will give you an honest read: if your glass is still safely maintainable, we will tell you. If it is approaching the etching threshold, you want to know now. Request a free assessment or call 702.522.1898.
